** Germany vs Scotland EURO 2024 Group A Matchday 1 preview: Where to watch, kick-off time, possible line-ups **

The German national team didn’t make it past the group stages in the 2018 FIFA World Cup or the 2012 EURO. But they have never failed, in either the history of the World Cup or the EURO, to make it past the round of 16.

That’s a pretty good history for a tournament team in either the successor event (the length and breadth of Klinsmann-Löw history takes up from 2004 to 2016), or in the future (Nagelsmann and his staff from 2020 until whenever).

On those two big “whenevers” coming up, though, much of the story and hopes for the Munich tournament teeter on the edge of brilliance or disaster, hovering over the single point of victory.

Optimism is definitely abundant in the Scotland camp following their splendid qualifying campaign. And why shouldn’t there be? The Scots knocked off three-time champions Spain, as well as an always-worthy opponent in Norway, and another decent side in Georgia. Under the managerial leadership of Steve Clarke, the national team appears to have at least the semblance of stability.

Clarke, who once served as Jose Mourinho’s assistant, has brought continuity and installed Ranger-like qualities to the national team, meaning that it’s fully plausible Scotland can become the latest side to upset the reigning UFWC champions.

Germany’s head coach, Julian Nagelsmann, says, “When I look into my players’ eyes, I can tell they’re hungry for not just an opening win, but a win in front of the home crowd here in reverberating Munich, which would make it all the more special for them to get a three-point start in this tournament.”

The happenings tonight will mesmerize many. And when “Auld Lang Syne” reverberates around Hampton Park, as it surely will if the score is level and the game goes to a penalty shootout, it will sound yet another round, in our “friendly arrangements,” of a time of deceit and treachery.
